One of Yosemite's oldest historic trails (built 1873 to 1877), the Yosemite Falls Trail leads to the top of North Americas tallest waterfall, which rises 2,425 feet (739 m) above the valley floor. Visually North Dome is a prominent landmark in Yosemite Valley, amazingly many have not heard of it. The North Dome is closed as of September 29 until further notice due to the University Testing Center moving into the North Dome at the Joyce Center. There is a hard way to the top of North Dome Mountain, and harder ways to get to the top of North Dome Mountain. Sentinel Dome is visible on the right horizon and you can also see smoke from a nearby fire (2015-08-11). The most difficult part of hiking to the summit of North Dome Mountain is the band of ledges you have to negotiate. North Dome via Devil's Path Trail is a 4.4 mile lightly trafficked out and back trail located near Lexington, New York that offers the chance to see wildlife. Porcupine Creek Trailhead: Follow the trail into the woods due north until almost reaching the back (and top) of North Dome. Cross the major trail that heads west (Yosemite Falls Trail) and pick up a smaller, but well traveled, trail that winds down around the west side of North Dome. Descending toward North Dome.
